Pope Urban II Pope Urban II had called the Christians to join him in a Holy War to reclaim the Holy Lands as an act of Christianity, but there were many activities that took place that weren't characteristics of Christianity. The Crusades were a smokescreen for Pope's craving for power and control. The Crusades were the idea of Pope Urban II, a wise Frenchman. On November 18, 1095 AD, Pope Urban II opened the Council of Clermont. Nine days later, the Pope made a very important speech just outside the French city of Clermont-Ferrand. In his speech, he asked the people to help the Christians' effort to restore peace to the East. The Crusades had originally been to help the Churches in the East, but the now it was to reclaim the Holy Land, especially Jerusalem from the Muslims. Pope Urban II stayed in France until September 1096 in hopes of providing leadership for the First Crusaders. Urban had originally hoped for the crusading army to be composed of mostly knights and other warriors, but his speech had already began spreading throughout the west, and many people of different social classes started joining the crusading army. (Foss, Michael. pg. 23) Because of this Urban lost all control of the army, which led to the slaughter of Jews in northern France. These poor people also caused strain on the armies supplies and discipline. They were never trained and they were poor, so they couldn't bring anything and were poorly disciplined(Foss, Michael. pg. 24). The entire crusading army had planned on reaching the city of Constantinople, but because of their lack of supplies and training the vast majority of them were slaughtered before they got there. The few troops that did reach Constantinople split up into two groups. One group tried to capture Nicaea, a key city that blocked the road of their supply routes. This group was unsuccessful. The other group was attacked near the city of Civetot in October. The few survivors retreated to Constantinople and joined the second wave of Crusaders. (Phillips, Jonathan. pg. 59) Religious beliefs were a major motive of the crusaders. In Urban's speech to the people of Clermont-Ferrand, Urban guaranteed the complete forgiveness of all sins to any crusader that lost his life in the name of the Crusades. Urban also proclaimed "It is necessary that you bring to your brothers in the East the help so often promised and so urgently needed. They have been attacked, as many of you know, by Turks and Arabs... Churches have been destroyed and the countryside laid waste.

Most of the wastes are produced at the primary stage of raw skin Processing. 4. 2. Solid waste 250 tanneries located at Hazarding produces 1 50 metric tons of solid waste everyday. These solid wastes are being produced at the initial and final stage of processing. Solid wastes produced from tanneries includes: Shaving Dust while processing raw hides and skins. Scarp of hides and skins. These solid wastes are being reused and produce leather boards, Syllabic, Chicken feed, fertilizer, soap etc. 4. 2. 2 Liquid Chemical Waste Liquid chemical effluents are pr oduced during tanning and dying. Different types of Chemicals are being in tanneries at the different stages of leather processing, including processing of raw hides and skins, chrome tanning turning a skin into bluish white colored leather. These chemicals includes:- Lime Sodium Sulfide Sulfuric acid Sodium hydrochloride Caustic Soda Arsenic Sulfide Calcium hydrochloride Chromium Chloride Dyes. 4. 3 Brigands River Pollution from Tanneries Water pollution of Brigands river is being affected and accelerated by 250 large and small tanneries located at Hazarding, at the bank of the Brigands. The diagram represents that nearly 99 percent of tanneries do not contain any treatment plant, less than 1 percent tanneries contain treatment plants. As these tanneries do not have any treatment plant, the tannery effluent with high organic and inorganic polluting loads is discharged on the Brigands river in the vicinity of the tannery area. And some of that wastes which are solid disposals are being disposed on open space, on he low lands inside the Dacha flood protection embankment. Ultimately, this wastewater is released through Arbitrary sluice gate into the river as every tannery is linked with Brigands river through drains 4. 3. 1 Location of Tanneries Most of the tanneries are located on the Brigands river bank and near the Dacha flood protection embankment. Every tannery of Hazarding is linked with Brigands river through drains. Generally tanneries are being located besides river because of availability of sufficient amount of water to clean animal skins into the river. (Torque Islam, Leather technologist of Dacha Hides and Skins Limited) And all of these tanneries release their untreated effluents into Brigands river through these drains, as a result the magnitude of water pollution of Brigands river is severe. 4. 3. 2 Effluents Discharged to Brigands River Daily quantity of waste water produced by these tanneries varies from 0. 5 to 0. Cubic meter per meter square of hides and skin processed (Aimed M. A. Froze) According to DoE, the tanneries discharge 22000 cubic meters of untreated liquid toxic waste into the river daily. Tanneries of Hazarding generate 7. 70 million liter liquid waste and 88 metric ton solid waste everyday, which are discharge into the Brigands river and 80 % of the pollution of the river Brigands is caused from ta nnery wastes. 4. 3. 3 Polluting Loads Discharged to Brigands River Different kinds of chemicals are being used in tanneries at the time of recessing of animals skin to turn on leather and leather products. The polluting loads which are generated from tanneries are being discharged to Brigands river includes: Suspended Solids Chromium (Cry) Chloride (CIO Different types of acids such as Nitric acid (HON.), Sulfuric Acid (HOSTS), Formic Acid (HOOCH) Salts of sodium Chloride (Nasal) Lime (Calcium Hydroxide-Cash) sodium sulfate (Nassau) Hazardous dyes etc. Due to indiscriminate discharge of these polluting loads to Brigands. The quality of water of Brigands as degraded to a great extent. The physical look ND smell of the water of Brigands is frightening intolerable and horrendous. 4. 4 Status of Brigands River Pollution at Hazarding 250 tanneries and their generated wastes cause huge pollution of Brigands river at Hazarding. To realize the level of pollution at Hazarding a few Water quality parameters pH, T DES, DO, BODY, COD and Cry are being analyzed by comparing with standard drinking water quality determined by DoE. PH is the indicator of acidic or alkaline condition of water status. The standard for any purpose in-terms of pH is 6. -8. 5; in that respect the value of Brigands River water are 7. 8 to 8. 9 in dry season. The overall result indicates alkaline water. Moral reasoning is individual or collective practical reasoning about what, morally, one ought to do. For present purpose, we may understand issues about what is right or wrong, virtuous or vicious, as raising moral question. When we are faced with moral questions in daily life, just as when we are faced with child-rearing questions, sometimes we act impulsively or instinctively and sometimes we pause to reason about what we ought to do. Much of our reasoning comes about through are position on an issue and how are principle effects that issue. Reasoning, so understood is an intrinsically normative concept. An important implication of this is that any empirical data that shows that we consistently think in a given odd way about morality can be taken in one or two contrasting lights: it can be taken to show that, since ‘this is what we do’ this is how our moral reasoning is. Alternatively, it can be taken to show that, in the relevant range of cases, we fail to think responsibly, and hence fail to engage in moral reasoning. And empirical data does not settle this kind of normative question for us. Therefore does morality require each person to reason in the same way, on the basis of the same fundamental considerations? In an idea world, people would do the right thing simply because it is right. In the world in which we live, morality is more complex. People often disagree about what is right. Even when a consensus on moral values is reached, many find that they do not consistently live up to a moral standard. One reason for this is that most people place a high value on their own welfare. They may have moral ideals and commitments, but concern about personal well being is a powerful motivating factor. It is more powerful for some than it is for others, but few can claim to be indifferent to it. Any significant gap between the demands of ethics and the urging of self-interest, narrowly defined, creates incentive problems for individuals and for societies wishing to maintain high ethical standards. The problems arise on two levels. At the first level are the direct incentive problems or opportunism and desperation. Problems of opportunism arise when individuals willingly violate ethical norms in order to pursue opportunities for private gain. I believe an example of this is, ‘George W Bush and the invasion of Iraq’. The world was told that Suddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, but to this day their have been no weapons of mass destruction shown to the world, rather George W Bush has gain notoriety as the president that went on to save the people of Iraq from a dictator. When analyzing this further could it be said that President Bush was concerned about is duty to protect the innocent people of Iraq or was it an opportunity to look good in the eyes of the world. What were the underlying principles. The fact that there was supposed to be the weapons of mass destruction has now faded in to obscurity. Did he yield to temptation. Or where there other principles at work. Secondly problems of desperation arise when individuals violate ethical norms to avoid loss or hardship. Even if we grant that most people place some intrinsic value on doing the right thing as they see it, sometimes the risk or the temptation is just too great. Too often we are presented with evidence from our daily lives, from news stories, and from academic research, that well-educated, apparently normal individuals can be tempted or pressured into compromising ethical standards. How then does this relate to the so-called real world? Human nature is not simple or uniformed, most people are not self centered, people often care about others. Nagel states â€Å"there’s one general argument against hurting other people which can be given to anybody who understands English (or any other language), and which seems to show that he has some reason to care about others, even if in the end his selfish motives are so strong that he persists in treating other people badly anyway†. Most people have some benevolent motivations and ethical commitments. Individuals have sympathy for the pains of others and take pleasure in others’ well being. However, this care does not typically extend to all of humankind, but only to a referent group (Hirschlieifer, 1982). The size and nature of that group varies significantly from person to person. The care also varies in intensity, depending on such things as the closeness of the relationship  with the other person, In addition to this passive care for others; people care about how they affect others. They generally do not want to cause harm, and do want to cause pleasure or satisfaction. Therefore in conclusion if most people have a benevolent motive to do the right thing in society and take pleasure in making society a happier place this would have to mean that society would need to be consistent in the way it treats people. There would be no impartiality or objectivity, all reasoning would be done from a top-down position. We would all then walk around with happy faces saying hello to all we meet, there would be no fighting anymore there would be no wars, there would be punishments that is across the board and not consider other factor into play. Fortunately society is not consistent in its moral and ethical day to day practice the fact that as individual human beings we are guided in varies situations by varies events that caused the situation, this becomes a bottom-up reasoning were we are in turn guided by other judgements which lead us to constantly re-evaluating our moral ground. Film review on “The Matrix: Reloaded”

The main aim for this piece was to persuade with a second aim to entertain the reading audience. I chose this genre because it gave me the chance to explore the language within the genre but also the presentation. My targeted audience was from fifteen to twenty as I feel this age range will read the film review on â€Å"The Matrix Reloaded† which I did my piece on. I looked at a number of film reviews and their style but I decided to create my own with my ideas, which I hope made it, more, creative. Throughout my piece I have tried to add humour as well as adding relevant and consistant points. This is shown in the section â€Å"the story so far†: â€Å"for one, you're stark raving crazy† I have used this humour because I was trying to steer away from the standard review because I wanted to personalise it with my own unique style. Developing on this I didn't want to have too much comedy within the review as I feel it would be hard to sustain it to a high a quality if I persisted with it through out the piece. So I included it in short sharp bursts to add `colour` to the review. When I did add the comedy I wanted to bring the reader back to the point I was trying to get across with phrases like: â€Å"seriously though†. This helps to remind the reader that the most important part of the writing is not the comedy but the actual review. I tried to use the above technique to involve the reader but I also this by using words like â€Å"you're† and â€Å"we†. These pro nouns makes the reader think that you are talking directly to them which keeps them involved in the writing. As the main aim of the piece was to persuade and secondly to entertain I had to choose my language very carefully. So I decided that I would use a lot of positive emotive adjectives to persuade my readers to share my opinion of the film: â€Å"funky† â€Å"cool† â€Å"impressive† The other main thing I had to think about was the audience I was writing for. As I aimed it at fifteen to twenty years old I tried to include some teenage jargon: â€Å"Check out these visuals† I used the phrase â€Å"check out†as I feel that the bulk of the people who would read this would relate to this kind of language as it addresses them in a friendly tone. Finally one of the main features of my piece is the layout and presentation. This is a key part because when people pick up a review of something the first thing that attracts them is how it looks. So I have tried to do this also by including a front cover which I put there to attract the reader and gives them a brief introduction of what the review is about. Where I think theses presentational devices works best was in the main review. I included a picture from the scene with writing wrapped around it. The writing is actually about the picture, which gives the reader a taster to what the film will be like. This in my opinion is the form of persuasion as it makes the reader want to see the rest of the film. In my writing I made a lot of amendments in the presentational side of my review. As you can see from my first drafts, the presentation is bland so I had to change so it was appealing to the eye. I did this buy using appropriate pictures from the film to complement the writing. The other main thing I did to the presentation was to use a background of â€Å"The Matrix code† which is a trademark in the films, but I feel this could only be truly appreciated by a â€Å"Matrix† fan. Regarding the actual writing the first draft I did was the style I was looking for so I only had to fine-tune it which gave me the opportunity to concentrate on how it looked. In my opinion the most successful thing which was included in my piece was the presentation and the way I adapted to my target audience. The presentation in the final draft in my opinion looked really professional and captured the mood of the films. I thought my language in my writing really suited my targeted audience, this is shown here: â€Å"get ready for the ride of your life† I think that the age range that would read this would relate to this in a way they could appreciate. A major problem that faced me when I was writing my review was trying to get my presentation right. I found it hard to produce the picture I had in my mind, which I wanted it to like. But I got there in there in the end with a lot of fiddling around on the computer. Overall I am happy with my final piece as I feel I met all of the criteria for writing to persuade and also adding my own style. If I was to do this piece of work again I would do some more research on the film as I feel this would strengthen my writing further.
